SEO or Google Ads: which should a small business start with?

Both SEO and Google Ads put your business in front of people searching on Google. They work very differently, though, and the right choice depends on your budget, your timeline and how competitive your market is.
How Google Ads works
With Google Ads you pay to appear at the top of search results for the keywords you choose. You pay each time someone clicks. Results start as soon as the campaign is approved, and you can switch it off at any time.
- Good for: new businesses, offers and launches, seasonal demand, and testing which searches bring customers.
- Watch out for: the traffic stops the moment you stop paying, and costs rise in competitive industries.
How SEO works
SEO improves your website so it ranks in the free (organic) results. That means fixing technical issues, improving content and building your local presence. It takes time — usually months — but the traffic keeps coming without paying per click.
- Good for: long-term growth, building trust, and reducing dependence on ads.
- Watch out for: results are not instant, and no one can guarantee a specific position.
A quick comparison
| Google Ads | SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Speed | Days | Months |
| Cost model | Ad budget + management fee | Monthly service fee |
| When you stop | Traffic stops | Rankings fade slowly |
| Best for | Quick leads, offers, testing | Lasting, low-cost traffic |
What we usually recommend
For most small businesses, the answer is "both, in the right order":
- Fix the foundations first. A fast, mobile-friendly website and a complete Google Business Profile make both ads and SEO work better.
- Use ads for quick enquiries while SEO builds up, focusing on the searches most likely to turn into customers.
- Invest in SEO and content so that over time more customers find you without paying per click.
- Reduce ad spend on searches where you start ranking organically.
If your budget is very small, start with your Google Business Profile and basic on-page SEO — they cost the least and often bring the first local customers.
